For precision applications involving low-ohmic-value two terminal resistors, the resistance of the lead must be taken into consideration. Low value resistors can be in or out of tolerance depending on where contact to the lead is made when connected into the circuit.
A practical solution to this problem is to specify a resistor with four terminals instead of two. With current flowing through the current leads the voltage across the sense leads is proportional only to the current flow and the resistance between the sense leads. It is independent of lead length or point of connection in the circuit.
Another factor to be considered for low-ohmic values requiring tight TCR specifications is the contribution of the TCR of the lead material (eg., CU=3900PPM/°C). The use of four terminal construction virtually eliminates the error due to the TCR of the leads. Four-terminal resistors are used primarily for precision cureent sensing applications.
